What a dental implant actually involves

Three visits over four to six months, a titanium root and a crown that matches. Here is the whole process.

A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jaw where a tooth used to be, with a crown fitted on top once it has healed. It is the closest thing to getting the tooth back.

Visit one: planning

A 3D scan checks there is enough bone and shows exactly where the implant should go. We draw the plan and the price on one sheet, and you take it home.

Visit two: placing the implant

Placing the post takes about an hour under local anaesthetic. Most people describe it as easier than an extraction. There is some swelling for a few days, then three to four months of quiet while the bone grows around the post.

Visit three: the crown

Once the implant is solid we take an impression and fit a crown matched to your other teeth. From then on it is brushed and checked like any other tooth. The implant itself carries a ten-year guarantee.
